Entry: Ry Ry and the Shmardinals Wednesday, August 29, 2007

May I just say. I haven't been writing up any of the gigs I've been to recently (read: the past year and most before that), but I had to talk about Ryan Adams (and the originally named Cardinals). WELL. Last Thursday at ye olde Enmore I was delighted to be attending RyRys show. Decidedly UNdelightedly, however, I found the band to be complete tools. NOW I will in their defence say that what they did play was completely, so to speak, off the chain. By which I mean it was awesome. These guys know their stuff and they know how to rock out. RyRy in particular does things with a guitar I haven't seen before. ANYWAY, there were a few song requests from the crowd. Most musicians will welcome this interactivity right, because after all, if a musician isn't a performer, what is he? (Right. Still a musician. But you know. He probably earns less money, consequently sticks to the inexpensive drugs like weed, and after a few years due to a lack of LSD induced epiphanies (which I'm sure Ryan has been quite prone to over the years) he gets over living a penniless existence and his mild to high intelligence going to waste and enrols in business college- where you KNOW his morals and intelligence matter! Yeah!). Anyway, so ol' RyRy and co didn't take TOO kindly to this, and tersely told us they were sticking to the set list, and basically that we, as concertgoers, should SHUT THE FUCK UP. They are, you see, artistes (not artists). And as you know, artistes are all about the music and they have a DEEP RELATIONSHIP with their music, that none of you will EVER understand, and FUCK YOU GUYS if you try to SCREW IT UP! Anyway some drunk girl yelled out "Wankers!", and as we all know, you should never listen to a drunk girl. Unless she's telling you she wants you to have all her money. In which case you should. Anyway. The boys took quite an offence at this, and RyRy stalked over to the microphone and cried (and I paraphrase here) "We've just finished the first set. Maybe when we come back you'll all know how to behave". Angry angry young man. Anyway, they came back and finished, with next to no chatter, not one smile from any of them, and no encore. So in sum: RyRy rocks, but as a band their attitude was VAIR ordinary. I wouldn't recommend it guys.
